1sts v Westside

Last night, in front of a crowd of around 20, we played a league game at home v Westside.

The opposition arrived late and the start was delayed 15 minutes and it was agreed to play 40 mins each way.

FCCY got off to an excellent start, creating several good moves and a few chances. However, it wasnt until a fast break on 9 minutes that Mark Nolan raced onto a precise through ball and hammered an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Despite total control, it took another 10 minutes before a fantastic move ended with Nolan being tripped from behind when 1 on 1 with the keeper. A penalty but nothing else was awarded, very fortuneately for the defender who was the last man. Pepe Petrov stepped up and slotted beautifully into the bottom corner.

4 minutes later, Fraser Shaw-Morris raided dow the left, cut in then back onto his left peg and took a pop. The keeper somehow managed to miss it and the ball dribbled into the net! Then Luke Holborough produced a rasping shot which the keeper did very well to parry, but he had no help from his defence and Tom Jones tapped in the rebound. Within a minute, a fantastic cross from Mat Pike was headed home from 15 yards by Nolan to make 5-0 after 27 minutes.

Several other good chances were spurned and the visiting keeper did well.

The 2nd half was fairly quiet, as FCCY strolled about, knowing the points were safe. This allowed Chris Meaton to return to the side as a sub after a 6 week lay-off, replacing the excellent Nath Pritchard and Rich Callaway to make his debut at this level, up front (despite being a centre half). Rich even had a goal chalked off for offside after one of the several good moves that we were still creating sporadically, although a more determined opposition were able to create 2 or 3 chances. Then in the last minute, we conceded yet another goal from a set piece. The marking assignment at a corner went wrong, and a free header wasnt gathered by Tristan Miller in goal, allowing the attacker to have 2 more efforts before the ball went in.

Overall, a good performance and 3 very well deserved points. 5-1 is a good result at any level, especially when you know there is a lot more in the tank.

We remain 12th currently, and hope to move up possibly as high as 8th, if we can maintain our current good form, which has seen 3 consecutive league wins for the first time this season (6-1 v Bromham, 3-2 at Devizes and now this game).

On saturday , we play Shrewton(8th) away, then Warminster (15th) away on tuesday under floodlights (7.45 ko ). These are followed by , Corsham (17th) home sat 2nd may (3pm), Marlborough (11th) home tues 5th may (6.15 ko), Westside (14th) away thursday 7th may (6.15 ko), and finally Marlborough(11th) away on sat 9th may (3pm).

Training

There will be training on wednesday 22nd and 29th april at Stanley Park from 6.30.

After this, we will take a break until we start pre-season training at the start of July.

Details will be posted here.

3rds v Bratton Res

This game has been "awarded" by the league as 0-0.

The original game was abandoned by the Referee due to "both sides losing complete control and having a mass brawl."

FCCY had NO cards and fielded 7 players aged 16 or 17. We were ultimately (after appeal to the FA) not fined.

Bratton Res had 5 (we think) yellow cards and 2 reds (in 40 minutes) and were fined £200 by the FA.

I will leave it to you to decide who was or wasnt at fault!

However, the league have decided that it is probably best not to re-play the game, as neither side have anything of significance to play for.

Recent results- 1sts

21st march - lost 0-1 home v Melksham Town Res.

A last minute error from Webby in goal cost us. Unlucky mate. Other than that it was an excellent performance with neither keeper having a serious effort to save. Should have been 0-0.

31st march - lost 0-1 away v Melksham Town Res.

A dodgy penalty with 15 minutes left, followed by missing 3 absolute sitters cost what would have been a well deserved 3 points.

4th april - Drew 2-2 home v New College. Another excellent team effort. Lead twice and should have won the game against top of the table.

7th april - lost 0-2 home v PurtonRes. Again a good team effort. 1 down for a long time, we battled hard to equalise and in the last 5 minutes got caught on the break.

11th april - won 6-1 home v Bromham. After 4 games against top, 2nd (twice) and 4th placed teams, it was nice to play an "easier" match. However, the half ended 1-1. After some calm analysis followed by severe threats as to the selection for the upcoming cup semi final line-up, the 2nd half was much much better. 5 goals in 14 minutes made the points safe and the score start to reflect the difference in quality of the sides on the day. Biggest win in the league.

14th april - won 3-2 away v Devizes Town Res. A brilliant 1st half, saw a 3-0 lead and the hosts reduced to 10 men. A repeat in the 2nd half would surely see an improvement in the goal difference.......sadly, it didnt materialise, and the teams lack of experience was exposed, as a physical but very hardworking and gallant host side attacked constantly, taking lots of risks. This allowed us to catch them on the break, but fail to kill the game off. Devizes pulled 2 goals back, but thats how it remained.

18th april - Cup Semi Final, Home v Melksham Town Res. Lost 1-2. Brief report on next blog item.

Was great to see a decent crowd of 96 (Garry Lock sat on the bench and counted them!!!!) which is better than many teams get at 2 levels higher. Thankyou.

Wiltshire Times report on the Cup Semi

Melksham Town reached the final of the Corsham Print Senior Cup defeating FC Chippenham Youth 2-1 in a closely fought tie.
It was the third time the sides had met in four weeks with Melksham winning by the odd goal on all three occasions.
In the opening exchanges honours were fairly even until goals from Josh Robinson and Tim Waylen put Melksham in the driving seat towards the close of the first half.
After the interval Chippenham pushed forward looking to pull a goal back but the Melksham defence denied them many clear cut chance.
With the tie in the last few minutes Jack Coathupe netted with a well taken effort to ensure a lively end to the game.
Chippenham manager Steve Manifold said : “The lads fought well and it was a shame we couldn’t have got a goal a bit earlier in the second half. Their second goal was a bit of a fluke our keeper punched the ball and it hit their player on the back a rolled in, he didn’t know anything about it. On saying that they are a good side.”
Melksham now meet Bradford Town in the final next weekend while in the final of the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup Greenmeadow take on Chalke Valley.

50 Appearances

Congrats to Garry Lock, for reaching this landmark when playing for the 2nds last saturday.

21st feb - results

This week was a bit of a "mare", with loads of players injured, away, ill, working etc. This meant that all 3 teams were weakened, the 2nds quite a bit and the 3rds very much so, but we did manage to get Jigger (Alex Orledge) to play for the 3rds after his self imposed exile! It was definitely worth it for him, as he got on the scoresheet along with Ben Pantry, although sadly it wasnt enough, as the 3rds went down 2-5 against Calne Eagles.

The 2nds played 2nd placed Byrons Wanderers and lost 0-4. Byrons now look to have a realistic chance of catching Greenmeadow at the top.

The 1sts went to a very strong and well organised Westbury Utd Res. The Meadow Lane ground is a very good facility - probably the best we have been to so far - and this seemed to have our lads at ease, pre-match. It was obvious that the home players were expecting an easy game, which was perhaps understandable after our last 2 results, but was the same mistake Bromham had made at their place before we beat them!

As it turned out, this was a game of few chances. FCCY had a double penalty shout in the 1st half when Aarron Merryweather was shoved over from behind and then the ball squirted to Mark Nolan who was tripped, but no dice from the officials. Westbury had one chance when the striker won 4 - yes 4 - consecutive tackles before making Webby make a save. Then a deflected pot shot hit our bar, before going out for a corner. Then a great sweeping move from the back, involving 4 passes and excellent movement, followed by a quality finish from Mark Nolan was struck off for offside. Nolan insists he ran past the defender after the pass, but hey-ho!

The 2nd half was just as tight. Westbury had a 15 minute period on top, but could only manage 2 strikes from distance which didnt trouble Webby at all. Then the game evened up and FCCY started to put some pressure on the home defence. This lead to a penalty! Aaron decided, in the interests of making life exciting, to pass it to the keeper who made a meal of it and palmed the ball round the post!

Then, amazingly (though correctly), we were awarded another penalty 2 minutes later. This time Pepe Petrov volunteered (as most of his teammates headed for the half way line!). After a very long delay caused by the protestations from the home players, Pepe kept his cool and buried the ball past the despairing dive of the home keeper. This left 5 minutes to play, during which time Westbury had several corners and a couple of half chances but we held firm and managed to inflict Westbury's 4th defeat of the season.

This result was built on a great team spirit with excellent performances from Chris Meaton and Jack Forester at the back and everyone working hard and doing their job. The next game is another easy one (not) at Calne Town Res, who sit 2nd in the table. We have now moved up to 13th and still harbour ambitions of reaching 8th.

1sts played at Corsham Town Res and despite some late withdrawals, a weakened team and only playing in patches, we had control of the majority of the match without ever quite being able to dominate. Josh Hodges on his debut for the 1sts came the closest to scoring on 3 occasions, Chris Meaton had a weak shot saved and Joner had what looked a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside (cross was from the bye-line!). Sadly, it was all to no avail, as Corsham scored in the89th minute on a breakaway, and so we lost 0-1. Very disappointing.

The 2nds played Pembroke at home, looking to complete the double, but failed 2-3. Goals from Brett Partner and Dave Nolan. At 1-1, we had a series of gilt edged chances but somehow failed to convert and ultimately paid the price.

The 3rds played a strong North Bradley side at home in the Spring Cup with a bare 11 players, due to a couple of withdrawals due to sickness.

Despite the issues, a spirited team performance saw a 2-0 half time lead. Sadly, this became 2-1 and then with just 3 minutes left, 2-2. So, extra-time was called for! In the end, the guys went down 2-4, but battled hard. Goals from Mark Kmiec and Tommy O'Cain.

The 1sts played v Bromham in the Senior Cup QF and despite not having played for a few weeks, actually played pretty well, creating several chances before a lovely move produced a fine finish from Joner. This was soon followed by Mark Nolans first of the match. The 2nd half was much better - fewer chances being taken at the back - and the game became very one sided. The only question seemed to be how many goals FCCY were going to get. As it turned out, it was 2 more, both from Mark Nolan. He also managed to hit the post when one on one with the visiting keeper. Our defence remained resolute throughout and meant that Webby had just the one shot on target in the whole 90 minutes to save, which he did comfortably.

The semi-final is at home on a date tba, v the winners of Calne, Melksham or New College!

The 2nds took the long trip to Wilton Town to face the bottom team, who are actually better than their league position suggests. Fortuneately, we knew this and therefore didnt take them lightly. A tight game resulted in 2 goals (from the bench) for 16 year old Josh Hodges and a towering headed winner from Craig Ewles in a 3-2 win.

The 3rds went to Bratton Res. The match was abandoned after the home team had 2 players sent off and others booked, and their goalkeeper deciding to impersonate Ricky Hatton. The league are well aware of the situation and DO NOT HOLD FCCY RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY.

They have had several independent reports from respected people who were present, plus FCCY had no cards AND Bratton "have a history".

Results 3 jan2009

The 1sts travelled to Shrewton, got changed and were about to go out for their warm-up, when the referee called the game off, due to the nearest 8 yards of the pitch to the changing rooms being frozen solid, and with the shadows going the wrong way, there was no prospect of any improvement. A quick change and drive home, allowed the whole team to watch the 2nds and 3rds, before some team bonding in the warmth of the Old Lane!

The 2nds entertained Swindon Irons, losing 1-2. The following was reported in the sunday independent:

"Frost bound pitches were the order of the day in the Wiltshire League with just one match surviving the wintery conditions. The referee in the Division 2 game between FC Chippenham Youth Reserves and Swindon Irons called both goalkeepers together before the match to look at the goalmouths to see if they were prepared to play and they agreed the pitch was playable. The Irons cashed in with a 2-1 win thanks to a double strike from Shane Spencer.

Both sides tooks time to get into their stride, the firts real action coming in the 15th minute when home goalkeeper Mat Spear pulled off a great save, getting his hand to an effort by Spencer that looked destined for the top corner.

Not to be denied, however, it was Spencer who finally broke the deadlock, scoring from the edhe of the box midway through the half to give the visitors the lead.

FCCY then ahd the better of the rest of the half as they pushed forward looking for an equaliser but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

The 2nd half continued in the same vein until a good cross to the far post by Mike Payne was headed into the net by Spencer. The home side were rewarded for their efforts when Brett Partner pulled a goal back and shortly after a good volley by Gary Lock hit the woodwork. The swindon side then came under a bit of pressure but managed to hold out to secure the points."

The 3rds also lost 1-2 at home to a much changed Westfield FC, despite missing a hatful of chances in the first 20 odd minutes. Mick Austin hit the post twice in the same move, and also mistimed a header when well placed, Tommy O'Cain missed twice, Tom Holbutt skied one, Dan Smith shot wide, Ben Pantry had a shot blocked on the line, Mark Kmiec had an effort blocked. However, as is often the case, if you dont take your chances you get punished and a long ball from a free-kick wasnt dealt with and the stand-in keeper Dan Tanner was beaten from close range to end the half 1 goal down. The 2nd half was much closer with few chances at either end, before a speculative volley from 40 yards sailed over Tanners head into the roof of the net. If the guy who hit it had a lottery ticket, I'm sure it was a winner!

FCCY pushed hard towards the end of the game to get back in, despite some very strong arm tactics from the visitors. Eventually Mick Austin headed a goal back from a Dan Smith cross. A few unsavoury incidents followed, all involving the visitors left-back, who somehow managed to stay on the park despite commiting as many as 4 seperate red card offences and FCCY huffed and puffed but failed to create a clear chance to earn a point.
